Old and New in a Vertical Stone House

Renovation Project of an Ancient Stone House in one of Israel's Most Mystical Cities

The ancient city of Safed is steeped in tradition. Therefore, when architecture and design firm HENKIN SHAVIT undertook the renovation of a home in the city’s tightly packed old quarter, the project inevitably became a conversation between old and new, between renaissance and preservation.

To begin the renovation, the very bones of the site were revealed: stone walls, arches, vaults, stone niches and even a water well. Next, a modern layout was created and materials were selected to enhance the original structure: expansive planes of glass accentuate the ample vertical volume of the ancient limestone structure and create partitions without visibly cutting the space. An original stairway was also preserved and complemented with a wood and steel bridge to connect two parts of the home.

Long skylights make up for a lack of windows, bringing light into the center of the structure.

Deep Summer

The Overarching Forecast for Spring/Summer 2016 is TRANS

The concept of 'trans' defines a brave new era of perpetual movement and transformation. Here, opposites merge into composites and design becomes a means of blending and merging in innovative and surprising ways.

TRANS is then broken down into four macro trends - Soft Pop, Deep Summer, Eco Active and Past Modern.

Deep Summer

The strange beauty of the deep sea reminds us of the wonders of the universe and the fantastical possibilities of going beyond its limits. Science takes on a cinematic quality in this preserved world where an unscripted drama is played out by weird creatures, bio-mimicry and morphing substances. Rare and contrasting materials take on an otherworldly importance, often in suspended and floating states. The atmosphere is ephemeral, refined and darkly compelling.

Fazit:
The colours and shadows of the deep blue sea are portrayed with a fluid installation of textile design and construction, creating a visual portrait of oceanic currents. Ombres blur and fade into each other representing the horizon meeting the sea.

Architecture Project Spain

Architecture Projects
Sunflower House from Mediterranean Cliffside
cadaval & sola-morales, Barcelona,

Embedded into the cliff side, and a stone’s thrown from the mediterranean sea, the ‘sunflower house’ can be found designed by barcelona-based firm cadaval & sola-morales. Positioned between cabo de creus and the urban settlement of el port de la selva, the cubic form in many ways become intrinsically connected to its coastal landscape. due to its context, the house is prone to strong winds so thick glass has been put in place. Referencing mediterranean architecture as well as the addition of contemporary touches, the exterior uses a white stucco and black window frames. meanwhile, it earned its name because it has been structurally designed to direct as much national light and heat inside- a solar collector. The composition and orientation of the volumes takes advantage of the intense and long hours of daylight in the summer, and simultaneously provides shade to the external patios.

The internal arrangement has been developed to connect the residents with the abundant greenery, the sea, and the views. Shaped by the geometry, the interiors capture dramatic views of the never-ending ocean- all of which is framed in a perfect square. Comprised of two levels, the private quarters have been placed at the top and the living spaces at the bottom where airy central space with a contemporary staircase merges the two floors together.
