Cube-Shaped House Takes In Dramatic Sea Views

It is defined by minimalist architecture and a dramatic location on top of a cliff, 215 feet above the sea. The project in the coastal village of Matanzas, Chile by PANORAMA + WMR Architects was especially envisioned as a holiday retreat for a couple and their son.

The 1,033-square-feet house has a cube-shaped exterior, with large window piercings that frame the views. As you step inside, you will discover an intricate layout, divided in two floors. The first level accommodates a single space for the living room, dining room and kitchen; in the back, there is room for a sleeping area and the second-floor staircase.

The terrace on the first level is cut into one corner to form an L-shaped living area, while the second floor is set on a 45-degree angle, which creates double-height ceilings in the social area.

Even during extreme wind, the inhabitants can spend time on the terrace, thanks to its special design and orientation. All interiors are finished in natural pine and white plaster, for a spacious, inviting feeling.

Simplicity and respect for nature characterise the Veranda House (Casa Varanda) project, by the architect Carla Juaçaba, located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A rectangular, transparent house, with glass walls and a weathering  steel structure, suspended 90 centimetres from the ground, cuts through the middle of land on which grow hundred year old trees and which ends in a forest.

According to the architect, the longitudinal installation of the structure in the middle of the land, occupying the only clearing that existed, is the principal concept of the project. And the skylight which cuts the roof of the house in the same direction as the house cuts through the land reinforces this idea.

The glass walls allow your gaze to cross the house, giving the impression of proximity to the surrounding vegetation, totally preserved by the building and guaranteeing privacy of the residence. It is the skylight which pays its tribute to nature, leaving the sun to mark the passage of time every day on the walls.

The Three Cusps Chalet Architecture

The Three Cusps Chalet charmingly renovated by Tiago do Vale Architects is a clear example of the Brazilian influence over Portuguese architecture during the 19th century. Sitting at the heart of both the Roman and medieval walls of Braga, a stone’s throw away from Braga’s Cathedral (one of the most historically significant of the Iberian Peninsula) this is a particularly sunny building with two fronts, one facing the street at West and another one, facing a delightful, qualified block interior plaza at East, enjoying natural light all day long.
The design team took as their mission the recovery of the building’s identity, which had been lost in 120 years of small unqualified interventions. The intention was to clarify the building’s spaces and functions while simultaneously making it fit for today’s way of living.

Fitting with the strategy of maximizing light and the explicitness of the spaces, the material and finish choices used in this project were intentionally limited. White color was used for the walls, ceilings and carpentry due to its spacial qualities and lightness. Wood in its natural color is used for the hardwood floors and clothing room due to its warmth and comfort.

A Modern Portuguese House from 1923

A quick look at the House in Estoril, Portugal, might have you thinking that Ricardo Moreno Arquitectos did a wonderful job designing a modern yet welcoming family house. However, that would be overlooking the fact the house actually dates back to 1923.

Unlike a conventional renovation in which the point is to highlight the features of the existing house and add hints of modernity (creating a good mix if you will), Portuguese architect Ricardo Moreno completely integrated the traditional shape of the house in his vision. The existing walls have been used as a bridge to modernity.

From outside, the house remains more or less the same. The outdoor walls have been preserved and refreshed with traditional techniques and materials. But, once inside, everything is new and arranged in a different way. A wooden volume redefines the house’s organization. Stairs are carved into the volume, leading to the private areas located in white suspended portions.

The result is a success. A wonderful patchwork of texture, materials and forms assuming the history of the house while writing a new page in it.
