The choice of location for deployment of the buildings aimed to make the most of the view of the terrain.

The openings, searching outside framings, act as plans of light of careful proportions that simultaneously capture and filter the surroundings.

Across the East housing front, with a direct and privileged relationship with the outside, are located a patio with access through the kitchen and living room, and the pool, surrounded by a paved area with different areas, both in terms of function and material and its permeability.

A Villa Designed for a Large Family

Designed for a family of five, Villa J by Johan Sundberg Architecture is a generously sized residence located in southern Sweden.

An atrium, secluded by walls and a pool house, unites the interior and exterior spaces. On the ground floor are the master bedroom and several ample social spaces, as well as a winter garden, kitchen, sauna, etc. The upper floor is the children’s realm, comprising a living room, bedrooms and a sizable family bath.

The floor plan is an attempt to merge different room types without the bulk of unnecessary walls and doors, with spaces opening onto each other in clear sequence and often with subtle shifts. Villa J can provide room for socialising or seclusion – even simultaneously. The main axes of the plot, the house and the garden work in symphony to create multiple unorthodox angles. The composition draws on an aesthetic somewhere between collage and a more austere expression.

The load-bearing structure is constructed of wood and steel with a concrete intermediary floor slab. The façades are clad with brick, light grey render, stained pine and black aluminium.

16th Century Farmhouse in Southern France Will Get a Contemporary Update


The architects at Brengues Le Pavec have set out to modernize this 16th century farmhouse in l’Escarène, 20 minutes away from the beautiful French Riviera towns of Nice and Monaco.  Although the beaches are easily within reach, the home sits on a serene hillside with a terraced olive grove overlooking the valley below.

A contemporary addition on the side of the home will project modern luxury without overshadowing the charming character.

The planned rectangular structure complements the forms used in the original building.  The architects also will use a light, transparent transition to blend the old and new spaces of the home.  Floor-to-ceiling glazing and a modern stairwell with glazed bodyguards provide the perfect intersection.
