Pantone has announced Greenery as its Colour of the Year for 2017

Is it possible to provide a different interpretation and a whole new meaning to a residence by simply redesigning the interior? This was the challenge taken up by Arkham Project when it was assigned the refurbishment project of a seventies-style villa looking onto Lake Como. In an attempt to unite, why not try to divide: four strips of different colours and materials intersect all of the rooms on each floor of the house.

Colour changes involve all elements without exception, from floor to ceiling, even comprising the swimming pool where it becomes an element of separation between the entrance and the counter-current pool. The lighting system, consisting of a combination of recessed linear elements for ambient and accent lighting underpins the linearity of the spatial layout.

A consistent use of materials, precise details, sharp cornered joints and intersecting lines perform the necessary function of redefining an identity and a new spatial layout.

A window overlooking the lake gives endless light and a fantastic panoramic view.

This geometric, open-air home is an extension on a Victorian terrace, resting privately around an enclosed patio just steps away from the busy city streets.

The restored house maintains the old brick perimeter, providing an old city charm to this decidedly modern construction.  The upper level under the angular ceiling provides a quiet space for personal relaxation, while the lower level kitchen and living room opens into the patio and spa just steps away.

While not much space was needed for the architect to complete this work, he has succeeded in giving an old building new life in a contemporary context.

Lately, it seems traditional Mediterranean architecture is getting a bit of a face lift and therefore making new from old is becoming more than a simple trend. The JA House by Filipe Pina and Maria Inês Costa is just more proof of that. The Portuguese home mixes rural and urban lifestyles very efficiently.

This project was built on existing stone ruins. Yet, the whole house has been reshaped. The former house has been modernized and completed with a new concrete volume. This one has straighter lines and contrasts strongly with the granite shape of the old house. Both volumes are linked by a metal and transparent structure containing the stairways. The new reorganization occupies the full length of the land. Inside, another old concept has been modernized and use as a basis.

Both buildings are connected by a central courtyard that provides light due to high quality steel windows and doors in the middle of the house and maximizes space inside.

The courtyard and the stairs are at the core of the house and are key elements for the spatial relationship between the different parts of the house. They create a continuity between the two volumes, indispensable in the case of such a project.

Indeed, to create new from old efficiently very often comes down to creating a coherent link between the two styles, the two eras. In this case, it is a success!

Perfect Adaptation to a Dramatic Landscape

Beautiful Hillside Home Overlooks Portugal’s Serra da Estrela
designed for a couple who wanted a retreat away from their hectic city life.

Camarim Arquitectos have designed a magnificent hillside home overlooking Portugal’s Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in the country.

Gateira is a small village placed on a beautiful hill planted with vineyards, pines and olive trees with splendid views over the southern tip of Serra da Estrela. The Z-shaped property is featuring multiple spaces, each on a different level, in order to adapt to the sloping terrain and dramatic landscape.

The design team sought to interfere with the particular landscape as little as possible.

Beyond the romantic notion of a well-grounded house, extensive contact with the ground gives enormous energy benefits: they used the earth’s endless thermal mass to balance air thermal amplitudes throughout the day and seasons.

The house’s core is split into two levels, as you enter the home at the upper story. Located between the living room and the master bedroom is a patio that extends out towards the swimming pool, as it also in turn generates ascending air flow across the house during the warm weather months and provides intensive insulation for fall and winter.

And while every space rests on its own level, each area also has direct access to the outdoors, evoking an enhanced sense of space, freedom and cohesiveness with nature.
