Old and New in a Vertical Stone House

Renovation Project of an Ancient Stone House in one of Israel's Most Mystical Cities

The ancient city of Safed is steeped in tradition. Therefore, when architecture and design firm HENKIN SHAVIT undertook the renovation of a home in the city’s tightly packed old quarter, the project inevitably became a conversation between old and new, between renaissance and preservation.

To begin the renovation, the very bones of the site were revealed: stone walls, arches, vaults, stone niches and even a water well. Next, a modern layout was created and materials were selected to enhance the original structure: expansive planes of glass accentuate the ample vertical volume of the ancient limestone structure and create partitions without visibly cutting the space. An original stairway was also preserved and complemented with a wood and steel bridge to connect two parts of the home.

Long skylights make up for a lack of windows, bringing light into the center of the structure.
